Friday Favorites

Hi friends, and happy Friday!  I have a new batch of favorites to share with you today.

This week, I’ve been thinking about fall/winter knitting.  And apparently, I’ve got slightly oversized shrugs on the mind — I realized I keep favorite-ing sweaters with a similar shape. It started with Ronan by Andrea Mowry from the most recent Wool People Collection.  And, like the rest of the internet, I fell hard for Veronika when it was released earlier this week (also: apparently it contains instructions for modifying for petite frames! I love these sorts of slouchy sweaters, but they can be a bit tricky for us shorties.)  And, after hearing lots of discussions about Marie Wallin’s Fair Isle Club 3, I finally checked it out for myself … the combination of colorwork with the slightly cropped boxy shape has me swooning.  I don’t think the club is in the cards for me right now, but I was happy to see that Wallin has a similarly shaped sweater in her soon-to-be-released Fair Isle book (you can spot it in the slideshow).

Not ready to think about heavy winter knitting yet?  Quince and Co. released two lovely pullovers this week out of Tern, their scrummy, lightweight wool silk blend.  I love the side detail on Cecily Glowick Macdonald’s Galaxie and the beautiful simplicity of Larimar by Isabell Kraemer.

A new episode of my favorite podcast Fruity Knitting came out this week, and they featured the amazing House Dressing in new releases. How amazing is that?!  Besides being in awe of all that knitting, it’s knit in my favorite shade of yellow.  Maybe one day I’ll tackle my own version …

Friday Favorites

When I was doing all my counting for my anniversary post, I realized that — quelle horreur! — there hasn’t been a single Friday Favorite to be had this month!

So let’s sneak one in right under the wire (just fiber today – I’ve been traveling too much to try new recipes!)

  • I love this new cardigan by Laura Chau — the texture is so fun, and I really like the higher v-neck — not something you see every day!
  • Also, have you see this new shawl?  It has bobbles! There should be more bobbles in life, I think.
  • And because texture is clearly on my mind, how about these sweet little gansey socks!
  • You’ve probably heard about Joji Locatelli’s Starting Point MKAL.  I’m trying hard to resist — I have too many projects and don’t think I have enough solid sock yarn in the stash to join in with yarn I have — but man, indie dyers are making it hard! I’ve loved/been tortured by all the pictures of yarn sets popping up on Instagram. I’m a particular fan of the two color sets dreamed up by Kim Dyes Yarn.
  • And let’s round things out with a couple of cute knitterly things: look at this adorable sheep pouch, with a design by Anna Wright, available from Ysolda, and I love, love, this sweater print from Tilly Flop Designs.

Friday Favorites, Not at EYF Edition

I don’t know about you, but my Instagram feed is currently full of Edinburgh Yarn Festival excitement at the moment.  And while I feel very lucky to be planning to go to EYF for the first time next year (yay!) … that’s a year away.  So I thought I’d do an extra long, fiber-only Friday Favorites today for those of us who can’t be living it in up in Scotland this weekend to click through and enjoy.

  • Since today’s theme is wishing I was at EYF, it seems appropriate to start the list off with the newly releasd Bousta Beanie, designed by this year’s patron of Shetland Wool Week, Gudrun Johnston.  The folks behind Shetland Wool Week have an annual patron who designs a lovely hat (previous years patrons and hats: Hazel Tindall’s stunning Shwook, Donna Smith’s wonderful Baa-ble Hat and Ella Gordon’s delightful Crofthoose Hat) and they announce the year’s patron and design at EYF each year. I love the simple geometric quality of this year’s hat (and love Gudrun’s patterns in general) — I’m definitely looking forward to knitting it!  You can get the hat pattern for free here.
  • I spied these lovely new bags from Kettle Yarn Company over on Instagram — they’re available at EYF this weekend if you’re lucky enough to be there and are going up in her shop sometime next week … that lobster!
  • There have been so many patterns released for EYF it’s hard to keep up, but one I particularly love is Spruce, an adult version of this popular baby sweater.  I love those colorwork trees!
  • Even though I don’t use straight needles, these gorgeous, ceramic needle vases have me swooning. I’m really into muted spring pastels at the moment … and I see no reason you couldn’t use it as a vase for regular flowers, lacking needles.  Or perhaps I should pick up one of the adorable mugs or pour overs (or one of each? if only ….)
  • The lovely US yarn shop Woolly Thistle is holding a not at EYF commiseration sale for thos of us left behind … there seem to be some really great deals.  This newly arrived yarn isn’t part of the sale (though it’s really reasonably priced), but wow, that natural Wensleydale wool …. Also not part of the sale, but at the top of my want to buy list: In the Footsteps of Sheep — how awesome does that book look?
  • And to round things out with a few more pattern releases: I love Thea Colman’s new sweater Angostura, knit out of Blacker Yarns Classic DK (which IS on sale at Woolly Thistle!).  I love the saddle shoulder, the simple front, and the surprsie of the back cabling … and I’ve wanted to knit wiht Blacker yarns for ages!
  • Last but not least: check out this new Melanie Berg shawl, another pattern that “premiered” at EYF … beautiful!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!  Here are some of my favorite knitting and cooking-related things this week:

  • Spotlight Sweater.  Tin Can Knits released a new book this week.  It’s filled with great patterns, but I especially love the bold, graphic design of the Spotlight sweater.  It’s going in my (very long) fall sweater queue … at this rate, I think it might have to wait until next year!
  • This little post on “the solace of hats.”  Short and sweet, but spot on: hats are my go to when I want to feel like I’ve accomplished something. Reading it made me want to pick up my neglected Tom and Jerry Hat or cast on for Newhaven.  Or stash dive (not buy yarn, not buy yarn, even though I reallllly want to try the yarn the pattern suggests) for this hat, which I’ve wanted to make since it first came out.  But I recognize that, at this moment, with everything I have on the needles, another project — even a hat — would be too much for me!
  • The perfect rug for knitters.  I made the totally predictable IKEA trip when I first moved into my apartment and fell in love with this rug.  It’s made of wool!  It’s design is made up of little v’s that look like stockinette stitches!  It has some of my favorite colors!  Was a new area rug strictly necessary for the new apartment? No.  But I caved and got it.  If I were more organized than I am at the moment, I’d share a picture of mine in it’s new home.   But for now, check it out on IKEA’s website and make sure to zoom in for those stockinette v’s.
  • This beautiful, tailored knitted skirt.  Knitting a skirt has never been high on my list of priorities … but this, this skirt is really special.  Wouldn’t it be a wonderful wardrobe staple?

 

Sustenance

  • This beautiful plum cake from Kate Davies’ website.  I’m hoping to stock up on plums at tomorrow’s farmer’s market and make it this weekend.  Just because it looks delicious.
  • This quick and simple dal recipe.  I made this for dinner last night on Mr. N’s suggestion, and I was pretty skeptical.  And then it was amazingly delicious.  It was super fast, even though I skipped the soaking step.  For the green chile, I used a jalapeno as that’s what I had on hand, and I omitted the hing as I didn’t have any.  I cooked the whole thing in a covered saucepan (again, out of necessity: I don’t have a pressure cooker) with about 4.5 cups of water at a vigorous boil, and just checked it every now and then to see if the rice and lentils were soft — I think it took somewhere in the ballpark of 20 minutes, maybe a bit more.  Topped with some plain yogurt mixed with salt and lemon juice, this was a tasty, super fast, one pot dinner, that’s equally good as leftovers, as I found today when I had it for lunch!
  • This article on the Great British Bake Off.  I’ve loved the show since I saw it three seasons ago when I was in the UK for research.  I was gutted (as they so frequently say on the show) when I heard that it was moving off the BBC and that Mel and Sue would not be going with the show.  This article at least brought me a few giggles … small comfort though, when I think that the GBBO will never be the same! (If you want more Bake Off-related reading, this is also a great piece about why Mel and Sue are so important to the show — and confirms what I’ve long suspected .. they are really decent people!)
