Hi friends, and happy last first Thursday of the month for 2018! If you’re new around here, every first Thursday a group of us post about socks. I’ve not made much sock progress since last month, so I’ll quickly tell you what I’ve been up to and then talk a bit about handknit socks and fit, something I’ve been thinking about a lot.

Anyway, hello again! It’s that time, the time of the month where we talk about socks.

Hi friends and happy … what day is it again today?
It’s hard for me to believe that I’ve been at my parents nearly a week! It’s been lovely to be able to hang out with my family, have a break from writing (I sent off a draft of my dissertation right before I flew!), and cast on a few new projects … I’ve been enjoying some quality time sitting out on my parents’ back porch, knitting and listening to the birds.

How was your weekend? Saturday was grey and rainy — good weather to sit at home working, which I certainly needed to be doing. But as the day drew to an end, the rain clouds cleared, the sun peeped out, I closed my laptop, and Mr. N and I took my newly finished Cartmel Carbeth for a walk.
On Button Band Isthmus …
I recently finished a few big projects and found myself weighing up casting on a new project versus finishing up a few longer standing WIPs. In a virtuous fit, I decided WIP finishing was the way to go, especially as I’ve got three cardigans on the needles, all of which I love the look of — and I’ve been feeling a lack of cardis in my wardrobe of late. I was excited about my plan until I realized, with horror, that all three cardi WIPs were at or near a certain point. You know knitters talk about getting stuck on sleeve island? Well, I’ve spent some time there for sure, but recently, I realized there’s another bit of sweater–well, cardigan knitting–that I get bogged down at every time … button bands. And thus, I’m adding a new location to sweater geography … button band isthmus.

Finished Objects!: Edina & Carbeth
Hi friends, and happy Sunday!
How’s your weekend been? As I find is usually the case, this one has flown by — but all filled with good things!
I’m particularly excited because today, I have not one, but TWO sweaters/jumpers (depending on who you ask!) to share with you, both of which I finished as February came to a close. So I’m very happy, as two is literally half the number of sweaters I knit last year — having these two off the needles hopefully augurs well for my plans to focus on garment knitting this year!
So first is up is what I’m calling my Edina sweater, as I knit it along with Kate and her friend Sharon for Edinburgh Yarn Festival. It’s the Stasis Pullover by Leila Raabe.
Once Upon a Sock: March edition
It’s the first Thursday of the month, so let’s talk socks — I’ve got sock knitting past, present, and future to share today!
First up, Mr. N’s Smooth Operators, which I finished mid-February, the night before I left California … so I was able to give them to Mr. N before I left.
#mostworn: Part One
Back in November, my lovely friend Kate of Rosalind Craft Supplies had an idea. A really good idea. Let’s document, reflect on, and celebrate the knits we wear the most. I’ll let her tell you more about it:
… the vast majority of knits we see on Instagram and Ravelry are new creations, fresh off the needles. What do those lovely knits look like after they’ve been worn for a while? Did the garter stitch section droop? Did that merino yarn pill? Did that dye fade? More so, I thought it was about time we cherished clothes that are looking a little worn in. With all this in mind, I’m introducing: the #mostworn blogalong.It’s a simple concept. I’m going to write about the knitwear I’ve worn the most in the past couple of years in three categories (torso, neck and feet) and take photos of their current appearance. Then I’m going to nominate two friends to do the same. And hopefully they’ll do the same. And their friends will do the same. And so on and so forth. We’ll fill the blogosphere with photos of well-worn, well-loved handknits.
