Well friends, this weekend, we had a knitting emergency! My beautiful sister has come for a week-long visit (YAY!) but …. wait for it … she forgot her knitting (gasp!)
Sis couldn’t be on vacation with no knitting, so off to the knitting store (such a burden). We took the opportunity to visit The Altered Stitch, a yarn shop that I’d been looking for an excuse to visit for quite some time!
You know, when Mr. N got his one-year position out in LA, I had such low expectations on the yarn front. It’s so hot, I reasoned, how could there be good wool?
And how wrong I was — as evidenced by the really fabulous yarn shops I’ve already gotten the chance to visit out here. And The Altered Stitch was no exception!
The adorable shop was perfect for Sis to get some emergency yarn. She loves knitting shawls, and the shop is chock full of beautiful hand-dyed yarn — plenty of choice for some vacation inspiration!
There were staples, like Hedgehog and Madelinetosh:

And lovelies that I have only spied on Knitstagram, like Woolen Boon:
I loved that the shop was bursting with color!
And friends, I almost caved and came away with a skein or two of sock yarn. But I took a deep breath and thought it’d be much better to come back to the shop and buy some pretties for a specific project, rather than buying yet another random skein!
Sis, though, came away with two beautiful skeins of toil & trouble‘s Cadence yarn (new to me) in a lovely shade called the Sandman: a beautiful light pink with happy flecks of color. She’s cast on for Summer Flies — if she lets me, I’ll share a little progress pic before she leaves!
So: another successful yarn shop visit! I’m looking forward to a return trip — maybe to get yarn for Waiting for Rain.
All these lovely stores are making me want to pack up and take a road trip out to LA!

Yeah! The woman working at The Altered Stitch told me (if I remember right) that there were around 20 yarn shops in LA county — crazy!

I made Waiting for Rain last year. It’s a fun knit. Do you have a color in mind?

It’s such a pretty shawl. I’ve seen some really pretty two colored versions on Instagram, so I’m thinking I might try that .. maybe cream and a sort of pastel mint?

That would be stunning.

What color/yarn did you use ?

Catastrophe! Forgot the knitting! Did she need a lie down? But how lucky to have such a great shop to ride to the rescue.

Hehe, I think I was more upset on her behalf than she was! She does like to knit, but I think she’d have been alright if she didn’t have her knitting for the week. I, of course, am always looking for reasons to go to the yarn shop, so this was the perfect excuse!

Love looking at the pictures of this shop as a reminder of the bright and colorful yarn selection! Hope you’ll be sharing my purchase at the second yarn shop too. Can’t believe you were able to walk away from both stores without yarn!!

Reblogged this on Yarnsage and commented:
I wish there were more shops like this around. I like going to big box stores but I would rather go to a shop like this. It is the equivalent to going to Starbucks instead of a coffee shop.
