Oof, the days go fast, don’t they?
It’s the first Thursday of the month again, so time to talk about socks.
So, I have a confession to make … for the first time in maybe a year, I don’t have a pair of socks on the needles!
Don’t get me wrong, I have plans … some plans I am really excited to share as they take shape. But the combination of lots of WIPs and Stage 1 Moving has not been conducive to Starting New Things. Especially if those things require a bit of thought.
So instead, I have some pictures of my finished Favorite Socks to share (as if you haven’t seen enough pictures of them in progress) (on Ravelry here)
I have to say, I’m super pleased with how these came out. It’s hard to do the yarn justice in the photos … Viola yarn has such beautiful and subtle color layering … watching the stitches unfold was a joy. Every color but the light blue was from a Viola sock kit specifically for these socks — and I picked up a mini skein of hers at the same time to add to the fun. The yarn is wonderfully soft, but sturdy — just what you want for a pair of socks.
And I also love the pattern itself. As a quick recap, It’s Emily’s Favourite Socks by Emily Foden, handdyer behind Viola yarns. It had been awhile since I’d done a traditional, top down sock. My feet are pretty flat, so having a gusseted sock isn’t a must for me. But my, this reminded me how pretty they look.
The socks are a great mix of cozy and functional — not so slouchy that I won’t be able to wear them in boots when it’s cold out, but perfect for loafing around the house in (fingers crossed they don’t grow too much in blocking though!)
I really appreciated people’s feedback on the toes last month. In the end, I opted for a mostly white toe with just a pop of red — I had more of the white left than any color, and I was looking ahead to using the yarn for Alex the Mouse. And I’m really glad I did. The white shade in a bigger expanse of stockinette has so much beautiful pink-y variation, which it was hard to get a sense of from a small stripe!
Despite finishing these weeks ago, I haven’t quite gotten around to weaving in the ends and blocking — a task for the weekend, maybe.

I meant to tell you too that I am in absolute love with the allbirds loafers I bought myself for my birthday. I can’t believe there is no breaking in period before they are comfortable; however I can see them only becoming more so once they have molded themselves to my feet. Thank you so much for the Friday Favorite recommendation!

And I am SO glad to hear that you’re enjoying the allbirds!! I am sooo tempted to get a pair of the slip ons (I actually also want a second pair of the sneakers …) they are just so comfy and I like that, even though they are wool, you can wear them in summer since they breathe so well. Thanks for reporting out on the loafers … maybe I’ll take the plunge!

I love the way these look! I might have to check out this pattern and make a pair for my dad’s birthday. He’s really into quirky, old-fashioned clothes, and these look like they might fit the bill perfectly! And I can totally relate to the weaving-in procrastination. I’ve actually worn socks out and about without weaving in ends! I hate, hate doing it!
